Everything had happened so quickly.  Everything had turned to black and back again within mere milliseconds.  It had just turned midnight when the comet passed by the earth.
No one could have expected what would have happened when it passed.  People gasped in awe at the amazing sight, the comet’s tail shined a bright blue and green as it hit the atmosphere, and that’s when it happened.  The lights around the planet went out and back on within the blink of an eye, but when they came back on, all hell broke loose.
The planet began to react to the dust of the comet’s tail, for the dust was one of a magical element for which the planet had only encountered once before.  The planet began to attack, earthquakes erupted across the plains of the continents, volcanoes erupted, tree roots began to grow and destroy buildings within its wrath.  Screams filled the atmosphere as blood drenched the land.
People began to run as the ground began to tear apart, some were lucky enough to make it past the fissure, yet those that were caught in the middle fell into the canyon were magma began to rise.  Many ran, trying to survive, trying to save those that they loved, while few managed to save themselves and those they cared about, many were unlucky.  Many watched as their families were taken from them right before their eyes, right before they were lost in the destruction themselves.
One man tried to battle the roots of the trees, he tried to save his family using the only thing that he knew how to use, a broadsword.  He was successful in slicing the roots, but there were too many for him to handle.  As his blade sliced into a root, another had swung around, connecting with the right side of his head.  The force of the blow had sent him flying into a wall, the wall itself collapsing due to the extensive force placed on it.  Pain filled the man’s left arm as the shattering wall landed upon it, crushing and ripping through the muscle of his bicep and forearm.  His eyes filled with tears as the pain of the shards of metal and concrete sliced into his veins.  The screams and pain filled cries of his family caused his tears to fall.
He let out a scream mixed with rage and pain before he began to sob.  He let out another scream as his tears began to cease, right before the darkness took over the earth once more, and his eyes closed as sleep took him under.
The magical dust particles began to take full effect as the atmosphere was darkened.  Creatures of myth and folklore began to rise once more.  Roars of mighty dragons began to fill the air as the beasts took flight to feast upon the wreckage, unicorns emerged from the forests to graze upon the grass, and lycans began to emerge with a howl as they ran across the darkened planet to feast upon the dead and any survivors they came across.  People began to hide in fright as the beasts attacked, few tried to fight them off as the lycans and dragons came close to their families only to be torn to shreds, their families crying in sorrow as they watched the slaughter.
Some families were protected by the unicorns that choose to help the children, the light from their horns shining through the darkness.  Many families ran towards the light, wanting the protection as well, yet that came at a price.  As the people ran through the darkness, the lycans took it as an opportunity to attack, catching many by surprise.  They howled in pleasure as they feasted like kings, the dragons roaring as they too feasted upon many survivors, as well as surviving cattle and livestock.
Though the darkness kept the beasts protected, it also protected one other, the man that had tried to save his family yet failed.  The darkness took pity upon his poor soul and let him live, granting him protection until the darkness faded into a balance once more.  His heart began to grow cold while he slept; the warmth that was once produced had left, leaving embers of what was once a strong blaze.  His mind swirled with memories of his family, the thought of losing everything on a day filled with joy haunted him.  He let out a scream filled with pain as he began to wake, his eyes greeting the darkness that surrounded him.
His teeth gritted as a growl escaped his lips, his nose twitching as he tried to pick up a scent besides that of blood and metal.  As the light began to fade into existence once more around him, a sigh of relief escaped him as well, his eyes beginning to search the surrounding area for any form of life that could help him.  He spotted his broadsword lying a few yards from him, which to him was a blessing; it was the only thing that he had left to remind him of his family.  He attempted to move, but was unable to stand due to his legs being numb, the muscles trying to gather energy while he sat in a pool of his own blood.
The light began to grow brighter with each passing moment; the man guessed that maybe an hour had passed as he sat in silence.  He slowly closed his eyes, ready to return to the darkness, when a light fluttering sound became present.  His eyes quickly opened, searching for the source of the noise, his mind beginning to race in an attempt to figure out what it could be and what he should do.  He finally decided on trying to fight if he needed to, yet gave up on that plan when he found the source of the light fluttering sound.  A little emerald scaled dragon landed upon his left hand and looked up into the man’s eyes, the man looking at the little creature in amazement and wonder.
Just as the man began to open his mouth to speak, the little dragon began to yawn, making a small yet pleasant little squeak.  All the man could do was smirk; he didn’t know what to think of the sight of the little dragon staring up at him.  He decided to close his eyes once more and leaned his head back to take in the growing sun light.  As the minutes began to pass, he began to hear a light chewing sound.  He lightly looked down at the dragon, his eyes widening slightly as he took in the sight of the dragon eating away at the dead flesh and muscle upon his left arm.
He felt no pain but only a slight tickle.  Although he felt very uncomfortable with the little dragon dining away on his own flesh, he did not move nor say anything, for he felt that the little dragon deserved to eat if it wanted to.  Finally he let a small smile fade upon his lips, his eyes focusing up to watch the horizon, the dragon licking the dry blood off of the flesh and bone.  After a few moments the dragon let out another little yawn, causing the man to focus on it once more.  The little dragon gently nuzzled the man’s arm, as if saying thank you, before it began to flap its little wings.
“Leaving so soon little one?” the man asked, his voice soft and gentle, yet with a slight rough icy edge to it.  The little dragon let out a soft squeak in response.  “Well than, be careful my little friend.  I hope you enjoyed your meal.  Until we meet again,” the man spoke gently, a smile set upon his lips.  The little dragon squeaked once more before nuzzling the man’s bare left arm once more, this time setting the bone ablaze in a brilliant green flame.  The man tilted his head to the side, watching the flame.  The dragon squeaked yet again, its little tail swaying to and fro, seeming to be very proud of itself.
The man smiled once more at the amazing little creature, causing the dragon to squeak once more in delight before flying off into the sky.  The man sighed softly before turning back to watch the green flame that burned brightly upon the bones of his left arm.  His mind began to wander as the flames burned, growing brighter with each passing second.  Then it accord to him why the little dragon had started the little blaze, for his muscles were beginning to grow once more.  The sight amazed him, for he felt no pain when he should have, his muscles and tendons began to reattach in the flames.  He soon began to regain feeling in his arm, the flesh beginning to appear once more, but instead of having a tan pigmentation to it, it shined a light emerald.
The man slowly began to move, having regained enough energy to stand upon his own two feet.  He slowly began to stretch, working out the kinks in his muscles, flexing his newly repaired arm.  A light sigh escaped his lips as he began to meditate, knowing that if he began his search without clearing his mind first that he would not be able to handle it.  After taking a few minutes to clear his head, he began to walk around the grounds that were once his home.
He rummaged through the debris that littered the ground, picking up pieces of wall and cabinets.  Books had been shredded by the trees, as well as the tables and kitchen appliances.  His eyes began to water as he found what he feared most, yet wanted to find, the bodies of his family.  He knelt down next to his mother, tears hitting the ground as he began to say a little prayer.  He slowly got up and moved to the next body which belonged to his sister, tears flowing freely as he knelt next to the little body.
“Why did this have to happen?” he began, his voice becoming rougher as the tears fell. “She had just turned six.  All she wanted was to see the comet, to see mom happy, to see me home.”  He lightly hugged the limp body close to his chest, holding her as if she was still alive.
Time passed slowly as he worked on the graves for his mother and sister.  Thoughts of them passed through his head.  The one memory that replayed through his mind the most was the one of when he left home to find who he was.  His mother cried, begging him to stay, that she would give him enough space, yet he did not listen.  He left during the night, knowing it was for the best.  He had been gone for three years before he found who he was, before he found that inner peace that he had been searching for.  He had returned in time to celebrate his sister’s birthday.  That was three days ago.
He sighed as he began to bury the bodies, saying a pray of passing as he filled the graves.  After it was done, he placed a flower upon each grave, as well as a little wooden cross for a headstone.  Night was beginning to fall and he needed to find shelter.  With a bow of respect to the graves, he said goodbye, vowing to see them again, and he was off.
He gently picked up his broadsword, the last present that his mother had given him, and placed it over his right shoulder.  With a sigh he began to walk, the soft tap of bare feet lightly pressing against the cold dirt road was all that could be heard within the growing night.
